Prof. Christoph Meyer

Since the 2009/10 season, Christoph Meyer, born 1960 in Lüneburg, has been General Director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg.

From 1981 to 1985, he studied theater and musicology in Munich; in parallel, he worked as assistant at various opera houses in Germany. From 1985 to 1989, he received his first permanent engagement as assistant director and evening director at the National Theatre Mannheim. From 1990 to 1995, Meyer worked during the era of Professor Michael Hampe at the Cologne Opera - first as a Director and from 1993 also as Chief Fund Manager and Director of the Artistic Operations Office. Parallel to his work at the Cologne Opera, he took over various directorial tasks at the Music Academy in Cologne as part of a teaching assignment. From 1995 to 2000, he worked as Artistic Director of Production at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain, where he was, among other things responsible for season scheduling in cooperation with the artistic director.

In June 2000, Christoph Meyer was appointed by Professor Götz Friedrich as General Secretary of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In this capacity, he worked as the General Manager's representative in all artistic matters for season scheduling and casting questions. After the sudden death of Professor Götz Friedrich in December 2000, Meyer together with the former Executive Director and Acting Director André Schmitz was responsible for the artistic area and directed the theater with him until the new director took over.

From 2001 to 2003, he had various artistic consulting contracts, including one for the "Festival Internacional de Música y Danza" in Granada, Spain, and the Fundación de Cultura "La Caixa," Barcelona, Spain. From 2004 to 2006, Meyer was Opera Director of the Basel Theatre. From January 2007, as Director of the Opera Christoph Meyer was responsible for managing the Opernhaus Leipzig along with interim directors. Coincidentally, from September 2007 he worked on preparing to become General Director at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg.
Throughout his career, productions and revivals of various works led him inter alia to Staatstheater Saarbrücken, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Opera Bastille Paris, Oper Leipzig, Oper La Fenice Venice, Opera Montpellier as well as to Tokyo.

Christoph Meyer has repeatedly served as jury member in several prestigious singing competitions, among others at the International "Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition" in Vienna, Competizione dell'Opera in Dresden, Bidu Sayao in Brazil and "New Voices" (Gütersloh). Since 2004, he has been a member of the CPDO (Chambre Professionnelle des Directeurs d'Opéra/Paris). Since May 2011, Christoph Meyer has been teaching as honorary professor at the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule Düsseldorf. In December 2014, the Musikakademie Gheorge Dima in Cluj-Napoca, Rumania, awarded him an honorary doctorate for his commitment to promoting talented young singers.
