Prof. Christoph Meyer

Christoph Meyer (born 1960 in Lüneburg), studied from 1981-1985  Theatre Studies and Musicology  at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. While still at university, he worked as staff producer at several German Opera houses including Deutsche Oper Berlin, Augsburg, Stuttgart, Saabrücken and Oberhausen. His first steady engagement was at the Nationaltheater Mannheim as staff producer (1985-1989), followed by an engagement to Cologne Opera (1990-1995) as staff producer and, from 1993 onwards, as Head of the Artistic Administration Office. From 1995-2000 Christoph Meyer worked as Director of Artistic Production at the Gran Teatro Del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain.

In June 2000 he followed a call by Prof. Götz Friedrich to work as  Artistic Assistant at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he was involved in all artistic decisions concerning cast and schedule as deputy of the General Director. After the unexpected death of Prof. Friedrich in December 2000 Christoph Meyer and Managing Director André Schmitz were together responsible for the Artistic Department  and lead the Deutsche Oper Berlin until the installment of the new General Director .

During the years 2001 to 2003 Christoph Meyer worked as Artistic Consultant for several international institutions, e.g. the “Festival Internacional de Música y Danza” (Granada) and the “Fundación de Cultura ‘La Caixa’” (Barcelona), Spain. From 2004-2006 he was Opera Director at Basel Theatre, Switzerland. From January 2007 to July 2008 he worked as Opera Director at Leipzig, leading the theatre together with the interim General Director. Simultaneaously he worked on the preparation of his new position as General Director at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg, which he took over in 2009.

During his career Christoph Meyer has worked on different opera productions at variuos international opera houses, e.g. Staatstheater Saarbrücken, Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, Opéra Bastille Paris,Leipzig Opera, Teatro La Fenice Venice, Opéra Montpellier and Tokyo.

Christoph Meyer is frequently invited as a jury member to international singing competitions like the Belvedere Competition (sinve 2001), Competizione dell’Opera Dresden (2004-2009), Bidu Sayao in Brasil (2004-2008), Competizione dell’Opera Moscow (2011), Neue Stimmen Bertelsmann Gütersloh  (2013 - 2017), Minsk International Christmas Singing Competition and the Meistersinger Competition in Nuremberg (since 2016).

Since May 2011 he holds a honorary professorship of the Robert Schumann-Musikhochschule Düsseldorf. In 2014 he was awarded a honorary doctor’s degree from the Academy “Gheorghe Dima” in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, for his engagement in supporting young singers.
