Bettina Giese

Bettina Giese is the Director of artistic planning and production of the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie / De Munt in Brussels. She was appointed to this position in 2018.

Born in Germany, Bettina Giese studied solo piano, repetition and song accompaniment at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar. Inspired by her experiences as an accompanist both for opera and Lied, she joined the Theater Giessen as stage director assistant and was in charge of music productions. In 1997, she was invited to the Frankfurt Opera where she worked as stage director assistant, followed by the position of artistic production administrator until 2004. During that time and subsequently she worked as stage director and leader of revivals at several international opera houses, such as Frankfurt, Venice, Barcelona, London, Hanover, Brussels, Freiberg, Linz and the Bregenz Festival.

From 2004 to 2006 she joined the staff of the Bregenz Festival as artistic company manager under the directorship of David Pountney and his deputy director Eva Kleinitz. From 2007 to 2011 she was production manager at the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie / De Munt in Brussels. In 2011 she joined the Stuttgart Opera as artistic administrator and head of its Opera Studio before she became head of artistic management of Stuttgart Opera. She held this role until 2018.

Bettina Giese has been giving regular workshops at the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding Munich, Opéra National du Rhin Strasbourg, at the Dung Duk University Seoul and the Lotte Lehman Academy. She is also a juror at national and international singing competitions.
