Greeting from the Patron

Dr. Ulrich Maly, Mayor of Nuremberg

Ulrich Maly

I am delighted to have been asked to once more take over the patronage of the high-quality 'Meistersinger von Nürnberg' Singing Competition of 2020.

In just a few years, this competition has managed to gain an excellent international reputation. Hundreds of young and very talented singers from all over the world will be competing for one of the most coveted invitations to the finals in Nuremberg, the city where the final award winners will be selected.

An international expert jury chaired by the great Wagner performer Professor Siegfried Jerusalem stands for quality and unbiased decisions. The members of the jury, all of them renowned in the world of opera and theatre, will select the award winners with care and professional expertise. The Opera House at the Staatstheater Nürnberg will once again serve as the stunning public setting for the spectacular finale of the Singing Competion.

After the awards ceremony the young “Meistersinger” master singers will be facing their most welcome challenge: Assisted by the Staatsphilharmonie Nuremberg, they will be courting the favour of the audience in Nuremberg's main city square, watched by many with a critical yet also appreciative eye. Before the last note has faded away, the audience will realize that they, too, have been among the winners.

The 'Meistersinger von Nürnberg' Singing Competition emphasizes in a spectacular way Nuremberg's cosmopolitanism. I would like to thank everyone involved in organizing this event for their efforts as well as those who contributed to its success beforehand with their generous support. I wish all the singers competing in 2020 the greatest possible success.
