Artistic Director of the Nuremburg National Theatre
Born 1956 in Basel, Switzerland, Peter Theiler worked already during his studies (history and German literature) among other things as assistant director at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and at the Frankfurt Opera. There, he was influenced by director Ruth Berghaus with whom he worked.
During the 1987/88 season, he received his first engagement as Director of the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen. One year later, he became Director of Operations and Director of the Opéra de Nice.
From 1991 to 1995 Peter Theiler directed "Perspectives," the only French theater festival outside France with headquarters in Saarbrücken. In parallel, he accepted a teaching assignment in scenery classes at the Opera Studio of the Music Academy in Basel. For two seasons (from 1994 to 1996), Theiler was engaged as a senior director and set designer for the Opera at the National Theatre Mannheim, before he became director of the ensemble Théâtre des Régions Biel/Bienne-Solothurn in his native Switzerland during the 1996/1997 season. In the 2001/2002 season, as General Manager, he directed the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen and from there was appointed State Director of the State Theatre Nuremberg at the beginning of the 2008/2009 season. As of 2018/19, Peter Theiler will be Artistic Director of the Semperoper in Dresden.
Peter Theiler is regularly a jury member at international vocal competitions, dedicated member of the German Theatre Association and board member of the Chambre Professionnelle des Directeurs d'Opéra in Paris.
For his commitment in mediating the French theater in Germany 1996, he was appointed "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" by the French Minister of Culture. He was honored once again by the same ministry in autumn 2004 for his cross-border work serving French culture.
In July 2012, Peter Theiler was appointed Honorary Consul of Switzerland.
