Birgitta Svendén

Svendén has a master degree from The Royal College of Music in Stockholm as a vocal coach and after her education at The University College of Opera she was engaged at The Swedish Royal Opera in 1981 where she has performed a great variety of repertory such as Dorabella, Cherubin, Olga, Erda, Fricka, Carmen, Octavian, Amneris among others.

Her international career started very strongly with her first production at the Bayreuth Festival where she was seen as Erda, Waltraute, Magdalene, Flosshilde, Rossweise ect. In between 1983 and 1999 she was a regular guest at the Bayreuth Festival.

In 1985 she made her debut at Opéra de Nice as Carmen, Erda and Anna (The Trojans).

In 1988 she made her debut at The Metropolitan Opera NY where she starred in productions like The Ring, The Queen of Spades, Rigoletto with Luciano Pavarotti, Meistersinger and others.

She has also appeared on stage at La Scala, Covent Garden, San Francisco, Berlin, Munich, Chicago, Buenos Aires etc.

Svendén has also been a frequent concert singer in cooperation with conductors such as Barenboim, Solti, Levine, Gergiev, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Haitink ect.

Svendén was appointed Royal Court singer in 1995 and Honorary Doctor at the University of Technology in Luleå. In 2005-2009 she was Head of the University College of Opera in Stockholm.! In 2009 she was appointed as Artistic Director of The Swedish Royal Opera and from 2010 also as General Director. She has been awarded several times from the city of Stockholm during these y!ears for her work of developing the opera company.
